Cyber Safety and Deepfakes

If a video can be faked perfectly, what still counts as proof?

The big idea

Students learn to spot manipulated media, understand the scams built on it, and adopt verification habits — with the honest caveat that detection is getting harder, so source-checking matters more than eye-checking.

Why it matters

This is direct personal safety. Voice-clone scams targeting families are already common in India.

Unpacked

What you will actually learn

Three core ideas, each taught with worked examples and then practised until it feels obvious.

01

Manipulated media

Manipulated media includes deepfake video, cloned voice and altered images. Knowing what is possible is the first defence.

02

Privacy and scams

Privacy and scams: the more of your voice and face is public, the more material exists to imitate you.

03

Verification habits

Verification habits are simple and effective — check the original source, call back on a known number, and agree a family code word.

Did you know?

Many families now use an agreed code word for emergency phone calls, specifically because a familiar voice is no longer proof of identity.

Common mix-up

“I would spot a deepfake.” Studies show people perform close to guesswork. Verification beats intuition every time.

Session by session

Your 8-session journey

Sessions 5764 of the 72-session year, at two one-hour sessions per week.

  1. 1

    Warm-up and big picture

Where this module fits, what you will build, and a hands-on starter that gets everyone curious about manipulated media.

  2. 2

    Manipulated media

Guided teaching on manipulated media, worked through together with the teacher.

  3. 3

    Manipulated media — practice lab

Independent practice, small challenges and one deliberate mistake to diagnose.

  4. 4

    Privacy and scams

Guided teaching on privacy and scams, building directly on the previous two sessions.

  5. 5

Privacy and scams — practice lab

Applied tasks that combine manipulated media and privacy and scams in one piece of work.

  6. 6

    Verification habits

Verification habits introduced and practised, completing the toolkit needed for the project.

  7. 7

    Project build

Guided build session for the module project: Deepfake awareness workshop.

  8. 8

    Test, present and reflect

Finish, test against the checklist, present the work and explain the decisions behind it.

Project lab

Deepfake awareness workshop

Every module ends with something the student built themselves and can demonstrate. This is the piece that goes into their portfolio and gets explained out loud at the end of session 64.

Try this at home

Agree a family code word this week, and explain to a grandparent exactly why it is now necessary.

It is finished when

  • It works from start to finish without breaking
  • You can explain every part of it in your own words
  • You tested it and improved at least one thing afterwards
  • Someone else used or understood it without your help

By the end of this module

Students finishing Module 8 can:

  • Explain and use manipulated media without prompting
  • Explain and use privacy and scams without prompting
  • Explain and use verification habits without prompting
  • Build and finish deepfake awareness workshop
  • Test your own work and correct what you find
  • Talk an adult through what you made and why
